Salou begins to act as Capital of Catalan Culture 2025

Salou. Costa Dorada. 26 January 2025. On January 26, 2025, Salou officially began to act as Capital of Catalan Culture 2025, after taking over from Sabadell, which held the title during 2024. From this moment on, Salou is the cultural reference point of Catalonia and has 12 months ahead to strengthen its cultural role in various areas such as heritage, history, popular and traditional culture, and in different artistic expressions.

At an event held in Sabadell, the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, explained that the program of activities is still being developed, but will include, among others, the discovery of new heritage sites. He also emphasised the reopening of the Torre Vella, which is undergoing renovation and updating works, as well as the celebration of popular activities typical of Salou such as the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Fiesta del Calamar in 2025.

Salou was named Capital of Catalan Culture last September 2024 and later, on November 26, 2024, the nomination was made official with the formal signing of the agreement between the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, and the president of the Associació Capital de la Cultura Catalana, Francesc Xavier Tudela, in the presence of the Councilor for Culture of Salou, Julia Gómez. Salou has thus become the 22nd municipality to receive this recognition.

Pere Granados is very clear that the municipality, as Capital of Catalan Culture, must project Salou as a cultural reference "beyond Catalonia, showing the rest of the Spanish state and Europe the wealth that we have". And the first step has already been the presentation of this capital in Madrid, within the framework of the Fitur fair, a reference for the national and international tourism sector on January 22, 2025.

The initiative of the Capital of Catalan Culture has more than 20 years of history and encompasses the entire Catalan linguistic and cultural domain. Its main objective is to expand the dissemination, use and social prestige of the Catalan language and culture, while increasing cultural cohesion between Catalan-speaking territories. In addition, this initiative seeks to promote and project the chosen municipality, both nationally and internationally.
